European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
