Department of Justice Joins Legal Challenge to Halt the State of California's Redistricting Plan
The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
