A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
